ISCP Surgeons Log

www.iscp.ac.uk

Summary:

The Royal College of Surgeons (England) commissioned PSE to develop a logbook for trainee surgeons and consultant to enter details of operations they have performed.

PSE produced an ASP.Net web application linked to a SQL Server database to provide a secure online database with national and regional reporting sections.

The brief

The Government require that trainee surgeons' experience is assessed against measurable objectives as part of their development.

Each specialty has a different set of operations which are sub-divided into a list of part operations.

A number of reports are required to enable the information to be analysed by trainee, surgeon, operation or region, etc.

Import and export to PDA and Access versions was also required.

How we answered it

The surgeons' logbook was developed as an ASP.Net web application.

A SQL Server database was used to hold the logbook information.

Because of the non-technical nature of the users and the requirement to capture accurate data, extensive use of Javascript was used to validate the information on the user's browser before submitting to the database.

Reports were provided in HTML and Excel format.

Security was integrated with the database to provide individual user accounts.

The logbook is now live and in use by surgeons in the UK and Ireland.
