Case study
drilling lenses

Berkshire Ophthalmic Laboratories Ltd

Thatcham, Berkshire

Summary:

BOL produce the world's best selling rimless spectacle lens drilling machine, the Optidrill Evo.

PSE were asked to develop Windows-based software to control the drill and provide the user with the ability to machine complex shapes onto the lens.

The brief

BOL required ongoing development and support of the control software for their Optidrill Evo. Some software had been developed in-house to provide basic hole drilling for fixing the lenses to the frame. Market opportunities required the ability to design complex shapes and machine them onto the lens.

How we answered it

PSE consultants analysed the capabilities of the drill and developed a protocol for defining the lens shapes.

A Windows application was developed to graphically display the shapes on a profile of the lens and control the drill to machine them.

Equations were developed for determining the reference points required for the path of the drill and real-time control software was developed to handle the communication.

The technology we used

The following development languages and technologies were used in the development of this solution

  • Visual Basic (VB)
